PRACTICAL ACTION PLAN—UNDERSTANDING EACH LAYER

Week 1—Master the Model Conceptually

Tasks:

  • Understand what each layer does
  • Learn real-world analogy (package delivery)
  • Memorize layer names and numbers
  • Know one protocol per layer

Time: 2-3 hours

Week 2—Deep Dive on Layers 1-2

Tasks:

  • Study cable types and characteristics
  • Understand MAC addresses
  • Learn Ethernet frame structure
  • Practice identifying MAC addresses on your devices

Time: 3-4 hours

Week 3—Layers 3-4: Routing and Transport

Tasks:

  • Understand IP routing basics
  • Study TCP vs. UDP differences
  • Learn common ports
  • Trace route from your computer to google.com (tracert/traceroute command)

Time: 3-4 hours

Week 4—Layer 5 and Troubleshooting

Tasks:

  • Understand common Layer 5 protocols
  • Practice troubleshooting by layer
  • Run network diagnostics (ipconfig, ping, nslookup)
  • Create simple network diagram of your home/office

Time: 3-4 hours

Success Indicator: You can explain all five layers, identify which layer a problem is on, and troubleshoot network issues methodically.
